Ten beginners complete the course

At the HEA 2017 Sunburn Shoot on Sunday 6th August, the weather was uncooperative, to say the least! Leaden skies produced the forecast rain just as the assembled archers completed their sighters and then blustery wind blew it about as it fell. Although the eleven hardy souls who took part were undeterred by the weather, the planned round was shortened to just one and a half dozen arrows at 40 yards and one and a half at 30, all with barebow club bows, added to which it was completed as quickly as humanly possible!

When the scores were gathered in, Coach Graham announced them in ascending order. It was Chairman Paul in 3rd place and Club Secretary Ralph in second, but coming in 1st place by a narrow margin it was Barry (on the right) who received the new Sunburn trophy. So congratulations to longbowman Barry who now has both the Sunburn trophy and the Frostbite trophy on his mantelpiece!

It was certificate day on Sunday 1st October for our 2017 Autumn beginners course. This third and final instructional session was moved indoors to Ince because of the weather forecast (totally inaccurate, as it turned out, but never mind - it gave the beginners a look at HEA's winter quarters).

After the range safety briefing at Altcar in week one, the trainees started with bare target bosses, moving on to barebow archery and, in week two, freestyle archery, finishing with an introduction to shooting in a tournament in week three.

The course attendees showed good progress throughout the course and we look forward to seeing them for their fourth session shooting alongside HEA members.

As always, the last item on the agenda before presentation of certificates was the ever popular burst-the-balloons free-for-all!

HEA team competes at Chorley Bowmen competition

Five HEA archers - Graham, Karen, Lisa, Lee and Paul - competed at the morning session of Chorley Bowmen's 2nd Annual Portsmouth Tournament on Sunday 15th October 2017 at South Ribble Tennis Centre, Bamber Bridge.

Billed as a friendly informal competition, the event attracted an impressive number of archers from across the region for the morning session, with even more due to attend in the afternoon.

Shooting with her flatbow, Karen was pleased to achieve a third place in the Ladies Barebow category.

Congratulations are due to HEA member Dave who was successful at the year's last 252 Challenge event (3 dozen arrows at the archer's chosen distance) on Sunday 15th October. Shooting with his recurve, Dave scored more than 252 points to earn his 40 yard badge.

HEA's 2017 outdoor season ended with the Ken Harris Clout Tournament on Sunday 22nd October when fourteen hardy souls braved the strong winds to compete for the Ken Harris trophy.

Clouts were set at 90 and 120 yards with most of the assembled archers opting to aim for the far clout, shooting with club bows and traditional bows.

After everyone had shot their six ends (three dozen arrows) and before the scores had been totted up by coach Graham, Chairman Paul took the opportunity to present Karen with her 3rd place ladies barebow medal from the previous Sunday's Chorley Bowmen Portsmouth Tournament.

When the clout scores were added up the results were: at the long distance, Lee in 3rd place, Graham in 2nd and Lisa in 1st. Shooting at the shorter distance, previous winner Karen scored the most points overall and so took the trophy back home again!

Junior member Heather, shooting barebow recurve this season rather than recurve, earned her 2nd Class for the first time in that category. Lee, shooting barebow, also earned a 2nd class.

With the outdoor season at an end, the list of HEA archers who have earned classifications this year is now complete. The following is a summary:

2017 Lee 20 percent

All of this year's 1st Class certificates went to HEA members requalifying this year, having originally earned their 1st Class in previous seasons.

On 17th September, after submitting his third qualifying round, shooting longbow, Graham was presented with his Bowman classification certificate and coveted green badge, becoming the only current HEA member to hold a Bowman classification.
