29th December 2007. The weather forecast predicted heavy rain combined with strong winds, and it was one of the very few times the meteorological office got it right! Was this rain? High Elm Frostbite Shoot

To put everybody on an even standing, the clubs training bows, stripped down to bare bow spec, where used by everybody. Two ends of Sighters saw the heavy rain turn into torrential rain, and a quick retreat to the container was made. The ensuing monsoon eventually eased off to moderately heavy rain, so it was back to the line (hardy lot these Archers). As soon as the first arrow hit the target, the heavy rain turned back into a monsoon combined with Hurricane like winds. A target was blown over, complete with arrows (not one was damaged luckily enough), at his point it was decided that the competition was to be cut short.

It must have been the least amount of arrows shot in competition (1 doz), but for reasons of safety, and common sense the shoot was brought to a close, as the relentless downpour continued. The equipment was put away, and all archers where treated to a welcoming hot cup of soup or warm mulled wine, gratefully prepared by our membership secretary Barbara.

The highest score, and outright winner was our Chairman, George Arnold, who won the ‘Jack Grogan’ Frostbite trophy. It was also our end of year achievements award ceremony, and many archers won Certificates/Trophy’s/Medals for their efforts through the past year, so well done to Tracey, Ian, Liam, Graham, Tom, and Jack for gaining your awards.

On a final note, due to the adverse weather conditions that the Frostbite shoot has been held in over the last two years. We may be holding the next Frostbite in July!!!…
